HeartScreen America
Marlborough High School to Host Heart Screenings for Marlborough Students - March 6, 2008
The Marboro Junior Woman's Club partnered with the Marlboro Public Schools and HeartScreen America of Andover, MA to offer heart screening services at Marlborough High School. Marlborough High School Principal Mary Carlson was instrumental in bringing this program to the students of Marlborough and agreed to host the screening event, "As a former health educator I believe this is an ideal opportunity for parents." said Carlson.
Many heart conditions that can cause sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can be detected with a simple, painless, non-invasive test, the electrocardiogram (often called an ECG or EKG). According to the Heart Rhythm Society, SCA claims over 14,000 young American lives each year.
HeartScreen America's screening program includes an electrocardiogram, which is reviewed by a board-certified cardiologist. In addition, each participant receives a family and personal heart health questionnaire, blood pressure reading and BMI calculation. The adult screening program also incorporates a cholesterol and glucose reading. Results are then sent directly to the home so this information can be shared with the participant's physician.
The program was held at Marlborough High School on March 6, 2008. Screenings was open to students. Screenings were voluntary, and cost $49 for children (6 - 18 years old). Typically, this test is not provided to children or covered by health insurance unless there are symptoms or a strong family history.
