Cool Ties

What are "Cool Ties"?

"Cool Ties" are evaporative cooling ties using special polymer crystals that expand and retain water when wet. Cooling ties are simple to make but the benefits are dramatic. They can lower body temperatures by 1 to 4 degrees. They can even be heated in the wintertime and used as reusable hand/pocket warmers.

The photos on the right show you what the cool ties look like.

How is MJWC Involved?

MJWC members made over 100 "Cool Ties" and are currently making more. We make some times to sell and some to send to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. For each tie we sell, a tie is sent to a soldier. The person who buys the tie can sign a card which will be included with the tie. The soldier receiving the tie will see that card and know someone cared.

How Are They Made?

"Cool Ties" are relatively simple to make and even those who can't sew can help! Making them involves the following:

  • Cutting the fabric (not hard)
  • Measuring and marking the places to sew (not hard)
  • Sewing a straight line (a little hard)
  • Turning the ties inside out after they've been sewn (requires practice, but gets easier)
  • Ironing the ties and passing them off to someone to add the crystals (both not hard)
  • Packaging the completed ties in zip loc bags along with a simple instruction sheet and readying them for shipping (not hard)
