Trivia nights are informal, fun, competitions where teams battle to see who has the greatest knowledge of matters trivial. General knowledge and trivial interest questions are asked by a trivia host and the winners are the team which, at the end of the night, have correctly answered the most number of questions.

You do not have to form your own teams. We’ll seat you with other eager attendees. Or, if you prefer, you can form your own team and reserve a table of 8 or 10. If you want to attend and ensure you sit at the same table, you must buy a block of tickets in advance. We cannot reserve tables until all seats at the table have been bought.

There will be a cash bar, and light snacks and desserts.

We will have several very cool baskets to raffle. Bring a canned food item for the Food Pantry and receive a free basket raffle ticket to be eligible for the basket you like best.

And don’t forget the 50/50 raffle!

Tickets are $20 per person. ($25 at the door)

Doors open at 7:30pm. Trivia begins at 8pm

Location: Hudson Elks Club (99 Park St, Hudson, MA 01749)

For tickets or more information, email tickets@marlboroughjuniors.org or buy tickets online at: http://mjwctrivia2012.qrickets.com/

Proceeds from Team Trivia go into the GFWC Marlborough Junior Woman’s Club general treasury.

At the annual Heritage Fair in Marlborough, MA on October 2, 2011, GFWC Marborough Junior Woman’s Club helped sell mugs filled with goodies to benefit Furnishing Options in Marlborough. Furnishing Options is a terrific organization that we find as many ways as possible to support. It provides free furniture and household items to people who are coming out of shelters or just establishing homes after difficult situations. MJWC volunteers every 5th Saturday in the store, makes monetary donations and looks for all kinds of different ways to help this fantastic organization. This year, one of our members discovered boxes and boxes of coffee mugs someone had donated. Since they were not really the types of mugs someone might want in their new home, we took them and filled them with goodies then offered them for sale at the Marlborough Heritage Fair. There were holiday mugs, teacher mugs, lottery mugs and more. All in all it was a fun and successful fundraiser. Who knows what we’ll come up with next!

September 11, 2011 was the 10th anniversary of the horrific attacks on this country. For the 9th year, MJWC created and presented thank you baskets to our local police and fire stations. 9/11 made us realize we don’t thank and appreciate our service personnel like we should so we started the 9/11 baskets project. Every year we present each fire and police station in our town with a little token of our appreciation — a basket filled with home baked goodies, games, puzzles and items to enjoy. This was our 9th year doing the 9/11 baskets. We will do them as long as we are able.

Three teams left the final stage of the race at exactly the same time and headed for the Pit Stop where there was one more challenge to complete to determine a winner. A fourth team was just two minutes behind the leaders after nearly five hours of racing to make for the most competitive finish among the four races held to date.

MJWC’s major Spring fundraiser was an original interactive murder-mystery, Death by Chocolate. There were two performances, April 15 and 16, 2011 at the Hudson Elks. Death by Chocolate was conceived and directed by Marlboro Junior Teresa Loftin Scarpato. The cast worked for months improvising the scenes and dialog until we had a cohesive play. The cast included:

Clara M. Calderón played Lola Montell

Mark Durrenberger played James K Tiberious

Beth English (MJWC member) played Roxanne Flaherty

Ariella Greenspan played Marilyn Von Eulenspiegel

Nicole Hatlevig played Lacy Q

JJ Lynch (MJWC member) played Stella Doreaux

Scott Rossini played Detective Skip deClue

Joe Scarpato played Dick Tracy

Teresa Loftin Scarpato (MJWC member) played Max Target

Jodi Schoolcraft (MJWC member) played Kit Katz

The play featured an amateur theater company putting on their first play, Death by Chocolate. The cast and crew included community members who lived and died by local theater. When the show’s star, Lacy Q, disappeared during the final week of rehearsals, director Max Target called in local celebrity and real estate agent extraordinaire, Marilyn Von Eulenspiegel. This upset many members of the cast, but especially Stella Doreaux who was Lacy’s understudy and expected the role in her absence. As rehearsals began with Marilyn in the lead (and not quite familiar with her lines yet), Lacy shows up out of nowhere. Mass confusion ensues. Not long after her return, she collapses on stage, dead. Someone in the cast killed her! Before the evening’s over and the detective is through with his investigation there is another murder. Marilyn is found dead in the green room. It was up to the detective and the audience to identify the killers.

It was up to the audience to ask questions, follow the clues (some of which were embedded in the program) and guess the murderer. We handed out fabulous prizes to those who guessed correctly (or close enough).

In addition to a play, there were fabulous appetizers (prepared by Harvest Cafe) and chocolate. Lots and lots of chocolate. Each night we had a huge spread of appetizers and chocolates for the audience to enjoy at the intermissions. While enjoying they chocolate, cast members roamed the room (in character) and answered questions.

The show was a huge success and a portion of our proceeds ($1250) was donated to the Arts Alliance – our local arts organization. The remainder went into the general treasury to be spent on projects and causes in the community (the first of which was a $750 donation to Furnishing Options).

We had so much fun with this show (not to mention the success), that we’re going to do it again next year. Keep your eye on this site for more details or sign up to be a Friend of Marlborough Juniors to get updates, including info about upcoming events.

We want to thank the Elks for donating the space which helped make this a very successful fundraiser for us.

On March 12, 2011, the Marlborough Juniors hosted the Metrowest Princess Boutique – which helps qualified girls get to the prom by easing the financial burden for them and their family.

Marlborough Juniors helped with this event in 2009 and 2010 and eventually took over organizational responsibility in 2011. Maureen Ahern Mongeau had previously run and organized this event.

The purpose of the event is to ease the financial burden on girls and their families by providing a place where they can come to fulfill their needs for formal wear. Each girl has a personal shopper to assist in finding formal dress wear, accessories, jewelry and make-up, and seamstresses are available to provide fitted formal wear for women that would like to attend Proms, Senior Receptions and Sweet Sixteens feeling fashionable and confident, without being stressed about the financial investment.

This year we had 158 girls attend and 147 left with dresses. We also had nearly 80 volunteers from various organizations and groups in the area. We are especially thankful for the seamstresses who volunteer their invaluable skills.

We could not have had such a successful event without the following organizations and individuals:

Champion Cleaners – for their donation of the dry cleaner bags to cover the dresses

MACY’s – for their shopping bags

Starbucks – for the morning coffee for the volunteers

MIT Copy Tech – for the posters

Our Lia Sophia rep – Laura Tonelli – for the generous donation of jewelry

S& F Concrete – for the storage facility (Lizette Frias)

Assabet Valley Regional HS – for hosting the event

NE Seamstress Association – for their time (Kathy and Rebecca)

Mary Kay – Denise Ryan – for the makeup and advice

Dresses were donated via businesses and individuals and there were a variety of new and gently used. In some cases the dresses were brand new, purchased with money donations. The MJWC spent time previous to the event inspecting all donated garments to make sure that they were of appropriate quality to be provided for consideration for the event.

Plans are already under way for next year’s Metrowest Princess Boutique.

The Metrowest Princess Boutique serves girls in and around the Marlborough, MA area, including Worcester. We work with area high schools to pre-qualify girls to come shop in our boutique.
